Lockdown Island Thoughts of … DAVY EDGE!

Davy Edge, poet actor, singer and all round great chap!

Occupation and Brief Resume: Actor/Musician/Poet. Following a long career in music and theatre, which started with being in the original Playhouse and West End cast of ‘Blood Brothers’ began following his passion for writing poetry, and has published two books: Poems from the Midnight and The Darkling Dusk and other poems’ both of which are available on eBay. Davy is currently working on his third collection. He also has a Jack Russell. Who is a bit mad!

FILMS: Good film I’ve watched recently: The Irishman. Outstanding performances from De Niro. Pacino, and Joe Pesci.

One of the best films I’ve ever watched: Crimson Tide. Tense and atmospheric, with top performances from Gene Hackman, Denzel Washington…and the Jack Russell terrier…

Got to be good if he’s in it: Denzel Washington

Got to be good if she’s in it: Alison Steadman

TV Series not to be missed and why: The Untouchables (60s series). Every episode is classic Film Noir.

Best ever comedy series and why: Difficult one! I love Only Fools and Horses. It’s not only hilariously funny, there’s always a human touch to it, and David Jason is wonderful, but Fawlty Towers takes some beating, as does Blackadder. I’ll stick with Only Fools and Horses!

Funniest Stand Up Comedian: Eddie Izzard…sheer genius. I have all of his work on dvd and was thrilled to see him ‘live’ at the Echo Arena a few years ago.

MUSIC RECOMMENDATIONS!

3 great albums you must listen to:
Close to the Edge (Yes)
Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin)
This Desert Life (Counting Crows)

3 songs you must listen to:
Mrs Potter’s Lullaby (Counting Crows)
My Brother Jake (Free)
Move On Up (Curtis Mayfield).

A great band/artist you need to check out and why: Stephen Bishop – a wonderful singer/songwriter from the seventies. The first album, Careless, is a masterpiece.

Best artist/band you’ve seen live and why: Another difficult one! It’s between Sad Cafe, Queen and Elton John. Apart from the great music, they all put on a tremendous show.

I’ll have to go with Queen. I saw them supporting Mott the Hoople at the Liverpool Stadium in 1974, and they were jaw-droppingly good! Mercury was a frontman second to none!

READING MATTERS:

Best Novel: Moonfleet (J. Meade. Faulkner) I’ve loved this book since I was a boy.

Best Biography: Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now. (Barry Miles)

Best Autobiography: Memoirs of a Mangy Lover (Grouch Marx)

A Single Poem to Inspire: The Road Not Taken (Robert Frost)

FOOD:

Your signature dish: Spaghetti Bolognese, so I’m told! Having said that, my roast potatoes have a reputation!

FAVOURITE RESTAURANT YOU CAN’T WAIT TO BOOK A TABLE IN: I’ve always loved the U.N.I. Restaurant on Renshaw Street, Liverpool. The food is wonderful, and you can dine in your own booth. I’ve been going there since the seventies.

DRINK: A good recommendation to chill out with would be … Apple and Mango Juice with sparkling water, because it’s very refreshing, and delicious! I haven’t drunk alcohol for almost twelve years, being a recovering alcoholic.

ACTIVITY SUGGESTION FOR FILLING IN THE DAY WITH KIDS OR NOT: Writing, painting, or singing! It’s good to be creative!

YOUR GREATEST DIY ACHIEVEMENT THAT HAS SURVIVED THE TEST OF TIME and what made you attempt it: I’m not a DIYer. I’m afraid! I’m totally impractical when it comes to DIY! I’ve saved myself the trouble of something falling down by not putting it up in the first place.

SOMETHING THAT MIGHT INTEREST YOU ABOUT ME IS: I became quite proficient in every sport I wanted to participate in, including skateboarding, surfing, sailing, riding horses, fencing, and canoeing. They have all enriched my Life.

HOLIDAY OF A LIFETIME when this is all over – I’ve always wanted to go to Jamaica. I’d like to sit in on a reggae jam! Maybe one day, I will!

3 LUXURIES YOU’D TAKE WITH YOU TO A DESERT ISLAND AND WHY (Nothing that might aid an escape, messaging or making contact with civilisation allowed): My cittern. I’d have to have a musical instrument with me. I’d hate not to be able to make music! My Palgrave’s Golden Treasury. I’d need to read poetry! I’d also need to write, so a pen and some paper would be useful…and I promise I won’t use them for contacting the outside world!
